Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David. ¹ 

David son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.

Jesse presented seven of his sons to Samuel. ¹  But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.”

Then Jesse presented ¹  Shammah. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse.

Jesse was the father of Eliab, his firstborn; Abinadab was born second, Shimea third,

This collection of the prayers of David son of Jesse ends here. ¹ 

Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. ¹  But Samuel ²  said, “The Lord has not chosen this one, either.”

So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is out with the sheep.

Then Saul sent word to Jesse saying, “Let David be my servant, for I really like him.” ¹ 

A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s ¹  root stock, a bud will sprout ²  from his roots.

Salmon the father of Boaz (by Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed (by Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse,

and Jesse the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon (by the wife of Uriah ¹ ),

the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, ¹  the son of Nahshon,

Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Is that all of the young men?” Jesse ¹  replied, “There is still the youngest one, but he’s taking care of the flock.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we cannot turn our attention to other things until he comes here.”

The neighbor women named him, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. ¹  Now he became the father of Jesse – David’s father!

Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you should do. You will anoint for me the one I point out ¹  to you.”

So Jesse had him brought in. ¹  Now he was ruddy, with attractive eyes and a handsome appearance. The Lord said, “Go and anoint him. This is the one!”

So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a container of wine, and a young goat ¹  and sent them to Saul with ²  his son David.

Jesse said to his son David, “Take your brothers this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread; go quickly ¹  to the camp to your brothers.
