and they saw 1 the God of Israel. Under his feet 2 there was something like a pavement 3 made of sapphire, clear like the sky itself. 4
for on this day atonement is to be made for you to cleanse you from all your sins; you must be clean before the Lord. 1
They assembled their brothers and consecrated themselves. Then they went in to purify the Lord’s temple, just as the king had ordered, in accordance with the word 1 of the Lord.
Therefore you must distinguish 1 between the clean animal and the unclean, and between the unclean bird and the clean, and you must not make yourselves detestable by means of an animal or bird or anything that creeps on the ground – creatures 2 I have distinguished for you as unclean. 3
The priests then entered the Lord’s temple to purify it; they brought out to the courtyard of the Lord’s temple every ceremonially unclean thing they discovered inside. 1 The Levites took them out to the Kidron Valley.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor 1 David. In his twelfth year he began ridding 2 Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, Asherah poles, idols, and images.
In the eighteenth year of his reign, he continued his policy of purifying the land and the temple. 1 He sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the city official, and Joah son of Joahaz the secretary to repair the temple of the Lord his God.
