He deprives the trusted advisers ¹  of speech ²  and takes away the discernment ³  of elders.

Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside! ¹ 

you young men and young women, you elderly, along with you children!

The glory ¹  of young men is their strength, and the splendor ²  of old men is gray hair. ³ 

The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped playing their music.

Grandchildren ¹  are like ²  a crown ³  to the elderly, and the glory ⁴  of children is their parents. ⁵ 

Princes were hung by their hands; elders were mistreated. ¹ 

Abraham and Sarah were old and advancing in years; ¹  Sarah had long since passed menopause.) ² 

Now Elihu had waited before speaking ¹  to Job, because the others ²  were older than he was.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons ¹  because he was a son born to him late in life, ²  and he made a special ³  tunic for him.

We said to my lord, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young boy who was born when our father was old. ¹  The boy’s ²  brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, ³  and his father loves him.’

פ (Pe) The Lord himself ¹  has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. They did not honor the priests; ²  they did not show favor to the elders. ³ 

Announce a holy fast; ¹  proclaim a sacred assembly. Gather the elders and ²  all the inhabitants of the land to the temple of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.

Gather the people; sanctify an assembly! Gather the elders; gather the children and the nursing infants. Let the bridegroom come out from his bedroom and the bride from her private quarters. ¹ 

Moreover, the Lord who rules over all says, ‘Old men and women will once more live in the plazas of Jerusalem, each one leaning on a cane because of advanced age.
