You will be protected ¹  from malicious gossip, ²  and will not be afraid of the destruction ³  when it comes.

If a scourge brings sudden death, ¹  he mocks ²  at the despair ³  of the innocent. ⁴ 

A whip for the horse and a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools! ¹

The Lord who commands armies is about to beat them ¹  with a whip, similar to the way he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb. ²  He will use his staff against the sea, lifting it up as he did in Egypt. ³ 

Your treaty with death will be dissolved; ¹  your agreement ²  with Sheol will not last. ³  When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by, ⁴  you will be overrun by it. ⁵
