But first he must ¹  suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

Wasn’t ¹  it necessary ²  for the Christ ³  to suffer these things and enter into his glory?”

For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” ¹ 

And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired ¹  to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the consummation of the ages to put away sin by his sacrifice.

saying, “The Son of Man must suffer ¹  many things and be rejected by the elders, ²  chief priests, and experts in the law, ³  and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” ⁴ 

To the same apostles ¹  also, after his suffering, ²  he presented himself alive with many convincing proofs. He was seen by them over a forty-day period ³  and spoke about matters concerning the kingdom of God.

explaining and demonstrating ¹  that the Christ ²  had to suffer and to rise from the dead, ³  saying, ⁴  “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.” ⁵
