“They are dismayed ²  and cannot answer any more; they have nothing left to say. ³ 

It laughs at fear and is not dismayed; it does not shy away from the sword.

Those who put their hope in Cush and took pride in Egypt will be afraid and embarrassed. ¹ 

When Saul and all the Israelites ¹  heard these words of the Philistine, they were upset and very afraid.

May those who persecute me be disgraced. Do not let me be disgraced. May they be dismayed. Do not let me be dismayed. Bring days of disaster on them. Bring on them the destruction they deserve.” ¹ 

The Lord says, “Do not start following pagan religious practices. ¹  Do not be in awe of signs that occur ²  in the sky even though the nations hold them in awe.

May they be humiliated and continually terrified! ¹  May they die in shame! ² 

They are dismayed because the ground is cracked ¹  because there has been no rain in the land. The farmers, too, are dismayed and bury their faces in their hands.

But now the same thing ¹  comes to you, and you are discouraged; ²  it strikes you, and you are terrified. ³ 

My heart is crushed because my dear people ¹  are being crushed. ²  I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay. ³ 

Your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, ¹  so that ²  everyone ³  will be destroyed ⁴  from Esau’s mountain!

Your wise men will be put to shame. They will be dumbfounded and be brought to judgment. ¹  Since they have rejected the word of the Lord, what wisdom do they really have?

Doing ¹  justice brings ²  joy to the righteous and terror ³  to those who do evil.

When you ignore them, they panic. ¹  When you take away their life’s breath, they die and return to dust.

because they will lack bread and water. Each one will be terrified, and they will rot for their iniquity. ¹ 

Now the coastlands will tremble on the day of your fall; the coastlands by the sea will be terrified by your passing.’ ¹ 

“But you, Jeremiah, ¹  get yourself ready! ²  Go and tell these people everything I instruct you to say. Do not be terrified of them, or I will give you good reason to be terrified of them. ³ 

The Lord is indeed going before you – he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!”

I repeat, ¹  be strong and brave! Don’t be afraid and don’t panic, ²  for I, the Lord your God, am with you in all you do.” ³ 

Then Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid and don’t panic! ¹  Be strong and brave, for the Lord will do the same thing to all your enemies you fight.
