John’s baptism ¹  – was it from heaven or from people?” ² 

one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

John’s baptism – was it from heaven or from people? ¹  Answer me.”

So Paul ¹  said, “Into what then were you baptized?” “Into John’s baptism,” they replied. ² 

In the wilderness ¹  John the baptizer ²  began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ³ 

He ¹  went into all the region around the Jordan River, ²  preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ³ 

I have a baptism ¹  to undergo, ²  and how distressed I am until it is finished!

Before ¹  Jesus ²  arrived, John ³  had proclaimed a baptism for repentance ⁴  to all the people of Israel.

Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, ¹  that is, in Jesus.”

But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I experience?” ¹ 

They said to him, “We are able.” ¹  Then Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I experience,

He had been instructed in ¹  the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm ²  he spoke and taught accurately the facts ³  about Jesus, although he knew ⁴  only the baptism of John.

Having been buried with him in baptism, you also have been raised with him through your ¹  faith in the power ²  of God who raised him from the dead.

And this prefigured baptism, which now saves you ¹  – not the washing off of physical dirt ²  but the pledge ³  of a good conscience to God – through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

beginning from his baptism by John until the day he ¹  was taken up from us – one of these must become a witness of his resurrection together with us.”

you know what happened throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John announced: ¹ 

Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from people?” ¹  They discussed this among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’

(Now ¹  all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, ²  acknowledged ³  God’s justice, because they had been baptized ⁴  with John’s baptism.

Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life. ¹
