A tranquil spirit ¹  revives the body, ²  but envy ³  is rottenness to the bones. ⁴ 

A quick-tempered person ¹  stirs up dissension, but one who is slow to anger ²  calms ³  a quarrel. ⁴ 

A rebuke makes a greater impression on ¹  a discerning person than a hundred blows on a fool. ² 

A gift given ¹  in secret subdues ²  anger, and a bribe given secretly ³  subdues ⁴  strong wrath. ⁵ 

Drive out the scorner ¹  and contention will leave; strife and insults will cease. ² 

Where there is no wood, a fire goes out, and where there is no gossip, ¹  contention ceases. ² 

If a wise person ¹  goes to court ²  with a foolish person, there is no peace ³  whether he is angry or laughs. ⁴ 

They were silent and did not respond, for the king had ordered, “Don’t respond to him.”

Then I will make their waters calm, ¹  and will make their streams flow like olive oil, declares the sovereign Lord.

So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging.

I will leave in your midst a humble and meek group of people, ¹  and they will find safety in the Lord’s presence. ²

for it is impossible ¹  for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”

What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline ¹  or with love and a spirit of gentleness?
