‘Heaven is my throne, and earth is the footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is my resting place? ¹ 

Do not be conformed ¹  to this present world, ²  but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve ³  what is the will of God – what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

Your obedience is known to all and thus I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.

– since the eyes of your ¹  heart have been enlightened ²  – so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, ³  what is the wealth of his glorious ⁴  inheritance in the saints,

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to fulfill their duty ¹  toward their own household and so repay their parents what is owed them. ²  For this is what pleases God. ³ 

and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm and eat well,” but you do not give them what the body needs, ¹  what good is it?

As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain ¹  in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

Therefore, remember what you received and heard, ¹  and obey it, ²  and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will never ³  know at what hour I will come against ⁴  you.

This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:

When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord ¹  told him. He took his wife,

But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

In this way what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet was fulfilled: ¹  “He took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.” ² 

What did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more ¹  than a prophet.

He ¹  said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry –

If ¹  you had known what this means: ‘I want mercy and not sacrifice,’ ²  you would not have condemned the innocent.

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Now ¹  someone came up to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?”

The young man said to him, “I have wholeheartedly obeyed ¹  all these laws. ²  What do I still lack?”

Then Peter said ¹  to him, “Look, ²  we have left everything to follow you! ³  What then will there be for us?”

Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right ¹  to pay taxes ²  to Caesar ³  or not?”
