When the disciples saw it they were amazed, saying, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil ¹  and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) ² 

For all flesh ¹  is like grass and all its glory like the flower of the grass; ²  the grass withers and the flower falls off,

Then, ¹  turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house. You gave me no water for my feet, ²  but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

Then Noah ¹  sent out a dove ²  to see if the waters had receded ³  from the surface of the ground.

We have plenty of straw and feed,” she added, ¹  “and room for you ²  to spend the night.”

Then they took him and threw him into the cistern. (Now the cistern was empty; ¹  there was no water in it.)

Then ¹  seven heads of grain, thin and burned by the east wind, were sprouting up after them.

So the people spread out ¹  through all the land of Egypt to collect stubble for straw.

If, however, ¹  the raw flesh once again turns white, ²  then he must come to the priest.

They ate some of the produce of the land the day after the Passover, including unleavened bread and roasted grain. ¹ 

Each one also brought to the assigned location his quota of barley and straw for the various horses. ¹ 

For now ¹  you have become like these streams that are no help; ²  you see a terror, ³  and are afraid.

While they are still beginning to flower ¹  and not ripe for cutting, ²  they can wither away ³  faster ⁴  than any grass! ⁵ 

Although its roots may grow old ¹  in the ground and its stump begins to die ²  in the soil, ³ 

The drought as well as the heat carry away the melted snow; ¹  so the grave ²  takes away those who have sinned. ³ 

Smoke streams from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning ¹  rushes.

Arrows ¹  do not make it flee; slingstones become like chaff to it.

I thirst ¹  for God, for the living God. I say, ²  “When will I be able to go and appear in God’s presence?” ³ 

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and insulted him ¹  in the desert!
