I said, “During the night I will remember the song I once sang; I will think very carefully.” I tried to make sense of what was happening. ¹ 

but when the hot wind ¹  blows by, it disappears, and one can no longer even spot the place where it once grew.

and lays the beams of the upper rooms of his palace on the rain clouds. ¹  He makes the clouds his chariot, and travels along on the wings of the wind. ² 

When you ignore them, they panic. ¹  When you take away their life’s breath, they die and return to dust.

He causes the clouds to arise from the end of the earth, makes lightning bolts accompany the rain, and brings the wind out of his storehouses.

and ears, but cannot hear. Indeed, they cannot breathe. ¹ 

Teach me to do what pleases you, ¹  for you are my God. May your kind presence ²  lead me ³  into a level land. ⁴ 

If only ¹  you will respond ²  to my rebuke, ³  then ⁴  I will pour ⁵  out my thoughts ⁶  to you and ⁷  I will make ⁸  my words known to you.

It is better to be lowly in spirit ¹  with the afflicted than to share the spoils ²  with the proud.

Like a city that is broken down and without a wall, so is a person who cannot control his temper. ¹ 

I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man ¹  on earth, ²  and I concluded: Everything ³  he has accomplished ⁴  is futile ⁵  – like chasing the wind! ⁶ 

Better is one handful with some rest than two hands full of toil ¹  and chasing the wind.

It is better to be content with ¹  what the eyes can see ²  than for one’s heart always to crave more. ³  This continual longing ⁴  is futile – like ⁵  chasing the wind.

Do not let yourself be quickly provoked, ¹  for anger resides in the lap ²  of fools.

and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the life’s breath ¹  returns to God who gave it.

He will give discernment to the one who makes judicial decisions, and strength to those who defend the city from attackers. ¹ 

This desolation will continue until new life is poured out on us from heaven. ¹  Then the desert will become an orchard and the orchard will be considered a forest. ² 

Look, I will take control of his mind; ¹  he will receive a report and return to his own land. I will cut him down ²  with a sword in his own land.”’”

O sovereign master, your decrees can give men life; may years of life be restored to me. ¹  Restore my health ²  and preserve my life.’

The grass dries up, the flowers wither, when the wind sent by the Lord ¹  blows on them. Surely humanity ²  is like grass.
