Look, you must be trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed staff. If someone leans on it for support, it punctures his hand and wounds him. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt does to all who trust in him!

The Lord God of Israel who rules over all ¹  says, “I will punish Amon, the god of Thebes. ²  I will punish Egypt, its gods, and its kings. I will punish Pharaoh and all who trust in him. ³ 

Why do you brag about your great power? Your power is ebbing away, ¹  you rebellious people of Ammon, ²  who trust in your riches and say, ‘Who would dare to attack us?’

“‘But you trusted in your beauty and capitalized on your fame by becoming a prostitute. You offered your sexual favors to every man who passed by so that your beauty ¹  became his.

The one who believes in him is not condemned. ¹  The one who does not believe has been condemned ²  already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only ³  Son of God.

Now we have such confidence in God through Christ.

Protect me ¹  and deliver me! Please do not let me be humiliated, for I have taken shelter in you!

The Lord rescues his servants; ¹  all who take shelter in him escape punishment. ² 

I will be a permanent guest in your home; ¹  I will find shelter in the protection of your wings. ²  (Selah)

Stop trusting in human beings, whose life’s breath is in their nostrils. For why should they be given special consideration?

so that we, who were the first to set our hope ¹  on Christ, ²  would be to the praise of his glory.

Now look, you must be trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed staff. If a man leans for support on it, it punctures his hand and wounds him. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt does to all who trust in him.

Suppose I tell the righteous that he will certainly live, but he becomes confident in his righteousness and commits iniquity. None of his righteous deeds will be remembered; because of the iniquity he has committed he will die.

Then the king was delighted and gave an order to haul Daniel up from the den. So Daniel was hauled up out of the den. He had no injury of any kind, because he had trusted in his God.

What good ¹  is an idol? Why would a craftsman make it? ²  What good is a metal image that gives misleading oracles? ³  Why would its creator place his trust in it ⁴  and make ⁵  such mute, worthless things?

And in his name the Gentiles ¹  will hope.” ² 

“This is what King Sennacherib of Assyria says: ‘Why are you so confident that you remain in Jerusalem while it is under siege? ¹ 

They say, ¹  “Commit yourself ²  to the Lord! Let the Lord ³  rescue him! Let the Lord ⁴  deliver him, for he delights in him.” ⁵ 

Yes, you are the one who brought me out ¹  from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother’s breasts.

Jesus ¹  also told this parable to some who were confident that they were righteous and looked down ²  on everyone else.
