He granted their request, then struck them with a disease. ¹ 

I said, ¹  “O Lord, rescue me ²  from those who lie with their lips ³  and those who deceive with their tongue. ⁴ 

For too long I have had to reside with those who hate ¹  peace.

The raging water would have overwhelmed us. ¹ 

lest you learn ¹  his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. ² 

Likewise, know ¹  that wisdom is sweet ²  to your soul; if you find it, ³  you will have a future, ⁴  and your hope will not be cut off.

The splendor of his forest and his orchard will be completely destroyed, ¹  as when a sick man’s life ebbs away. ² 

I ¹  look for ²  you during the night, my spirit within me seeks you at dawn, for when your judgments come upon the earth, those who live in the world learn about justice. ³ 

Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”

He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.”

Indeed, as a result of him the thoughts ¹  of many hearts will be revealed ²  – and a sword ³  will pierce your own soul as well!” ⁴ 

“Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say? ‘Father, deliver me ¹  from this hour’? ²  No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour. ³ 

because you will not leave my soul in Hades, ¹  nor permit your Holy One to experience ²  decay.

So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly ¹  welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls.

(for while he lived among them day after day, that righteous man was tormented in his righteous soul ¹  by the lawless deeds he saw and heard ² )

Their eyes, ¹  full of adultery, ²  never stop sinning; ³  they entice ⁴  unstable people. ⁵  They have trained their hearts for greed, these cursed children! ⁶ 

The Lord said to his people: ¹  “You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. ²  Ask where the old, reliable paths ³  are. Ask where the path is that leads to blessing ⁴  and follow it. If you do, you will find rest for your souls.” But they said, “We will not follow it!”

Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

O my soul, do not come into their council, do not be united to their assembly, my heart, ¹  for in their anger they have killed men, and for pleasure they have hamstrung oxen.

for the life of every living thing ¹  is in the blood. ²  So I myself have assigned it to you ³  on the altar to make atonement for your lives, for the blood makes atonement by means of the life. ⁴
