And those who were in front ¹  scolded ²  him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted ³  even more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

I considered these things carefully ¹  and then registered a complaint with the wealthy ²  and the officials. I said to them, “Each one of you is seizing the collateral ³  from your own countrymen!” ⁴  Because of them I called for ⁵  a great public assembly.

May the godly strike me in love and correct me! May my head not refuse ¹  choice oil! ²  Indeed, my prayer is a witness against their evil deeds. ³ 

And have you forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons? “My son, do not scorn ¹  the Lord’s discipline or give up when he corrects ²  you.

For this reason whoever is smart ¹  keeps quiet ²  in such a time, for it is an evil ³  time.

David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and started down ¹  the road.

The one who heeds instruction ¹  is on the way to ²  life, but the one who rejects ³  rebuke goes astray.

Many scolded ¹  him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

David went out to meet them and said, ¹  “If you come to me in peace and want to help me, then I will make an alliance with you. ²  But if you come to betray me to my enemies when I have not harmed you, ³  may the God of our ancestors ⁴  take notice and judge!”

But Abraham lodged a complaint ¹  against Abimelech concerning a well ²  that Abimelech’s servants had seized. ³ 

So I registered a complaint with the nobles of Judah, saying to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?

Do you intend to criticize mere words, and treat ¹  the words of a despairing man as wind?

Or a person is chastened ¹  by pain on his bed, and with the continual strife of his bones, ² 

“Will the one who contends ¹  with the Almighty correct him? ²  Let the person who accuses God give him an answer!”

For your arrows pierce ¹  me, and your hand presses me down. ² 

I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. ¹ 

I suffer all day long, and am punished every morning.”

For the commandments ¹  are like ²  a lamp, ³  instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like ⁴  the road leading to life, ⁵ 

The one who winks ¹  his ²  eye causes ³  trouble, and the one who speaks foolishness ⁴  will come to ruin.

The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, ¹  but the one who hates reproof is stupid. ²
