These are the waters of Meribah, because the Israelites contended with the Lord, and his holiness was maintained ¹  among them.

And God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”

They crouch and lie down like a lion, and as a lioness, ¹  who can stir him? Blessed is the one who blesses you, and cursed is the one who curses you!’”

But they said to Joshua, “We are willing to be your subjects.” ¹  So Joshua said to them, “Who are you and where do you come from?”

Manoah said to the Lord’s messenger, “Tell us your name, so we can honor you when your announcement comes true.” ¹ 

Then the people said to Samuel, “Who were the ones asking, ‘Will Saul reign over us?’ Hand over those men so we may execute them!”

David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”

The woman replied, “Who is it that I should bring up for you?” He said, “Bring up for me Samuel.”

Indeed, ¹  who is God besides the Lord? Who is a protector ²  besides our God? ³ 

David was thirsty and said, “How I wish someone would give me some water to drink from the cistern in Bethlehem near the gate!”

Call to mind now: ¹  Who, ²  being innocent, ever perished? ³  And where were upright people ⁴  ever destroyed? ⁵ 

If a land ¹  has been given into the hand of a wicked man, ²  he covers ³  the faces of its judges; ⁴  if it is not he, then who is it? ⁵ 

Which of all these ¹  does not know that the hand of the Lord ²  has done ³  this,

“O that ¹  you would hide me in Sheol, ²  and conceal me till your anger has passed! ³  O that you would set me a time ⁴  and then remember me! ⁵ 

if ¹  the members of my household ²  have never said, ³  ‘If only there were ⁴  someone who has not been satisfied from Job’s ⁵  meat!’ –

On what ¹  were its bases ²  set, or who laid its cornerstone –

Who prepares prey for the raven, when its young cry out to God and wander about ¹  for lack of food?

(Who has confronted ¹  me that I should repay? ²  Everything under heaven belongs to me!) ³ 

Many say, “Who can show us anything good?” Smile upon us, Lord! ¹
