The king and all the people who were with him arrived exhausted at their destination, where David ¹  refreshed himself.

David’s power steadily grew, for the Lord who commands armies was with him. ¹ 

By his power he stills ¹  the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab the great sea monster ²  to pieces. ³ 

When I refused to confess my sin, ¹  my whole body wasted away, ²  while I groaned in pain all day long.

But it is you, ¹  a man like me, ²  my close friend in whom I confided. ³ 

I said, “I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me.” ¹  (Selah)

but when the hot wind ¹  blows by, it disappears, and one can no longer even spot the place where it once grew.

In the womb he attacked his brother; in his manly vigor he struggled ¹  with God.

When they were fed, ¹  they became satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; ²  as a result, they forgot me!

So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging.

but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” ¹ 

(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) ¹ 

When he came to the steps, Paul ¹  had to be carried ²  by the soldiers because of the violence ³  of the mob,

(When they heard ¹  that he was addressing ²  them in Aramaic, ³  they became even ⁴  quieter.) ⁵  Then ⁶  Paul said,

When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to ¹  other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his father David had been. ² 

But once he became powerful, his pride destroyed him. ¹  He disobeyed ²  the Lord his God. He entered the Lord’s temple to offer incense on the incense altar.

Like a swallow or a thrush I chirp, I coo ¹  like a dove; my eyes grow tired from looking up to the sky. ²  O sovereign master, ³  I am oppressed; help me! ⁴ 

Because of the long distance you must travel, you get tired, ¹  but you do not say, ‘I give up.’ ²  You get renewed energy, ³  so you don’t collapse. ⁴ 

You were adorned with gold and silver, while your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidery. You ate the finest flour, honey, and olive oil. You became extremely beautiful and attained the position of royalty.

The Lord God appointed ¹  a little plant ²  and caused it to grow up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to rescue ³  him from his misery. ⁴  Now Jonah was very delighted ⁵  about the little plant.
