My people will live in peaceful settlements, in secure homes, and in safe, quiet places. ¹ 

They will build houses and live in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

In all the vineyards there will be wailing, for I will pass through ¹  your midst,” says the Lord.

And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, ¹  he sent them into his vineyard.

So ¹  they seized him, ²  threw him out of the vineyard, ³  and killed him.

Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

But they were indifferent and went away, one to his farm, another to his business.

At harvest time he sent a slave ¹  to the tenants to collect from them ²  his portion of the crop. ³ 

So ¹  they seized him, ²  killed him, and threw his body ³  out of the vineyard. ⁴ 

So ¹  they threw him out of the vineyard and killed ²  him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

“If a man grazes ¹  his livestock ²  in a field or a vineyard, and he lets the livestock loose and they graze in the field of another man, he must make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.

You will be engaged to a woman and another man will rape ¹  her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not even begin to use it.

I gave you a land in ¹  which you had not worked hard; you took up residence in cities you did not build and you are eating the produce of ²  vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.’

Such idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field. They cannot talk. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them because they cannot hurt you. And they do not have any power to help you.” ¹ 

Do not build houses. Do not plant crops. Do not plant a vineyard or own one. ¹  Live in tents all your lives. If you do these things you will ²  live a long time in the land that you wander about on.’ ³ 

“But woe to you Pharisees! ¹  You give a tenth ²  of your mint, ³  rue, ⁴  and every herb, yet you neglect justice ⁵  and love for God! But you should have done these things without neglecting the others. ⁶ 

Elisha ¹  replied, “I was there in spirit when a man turned and got down from his chariot to meet you. ²  This is not the proper time to accept silver or to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, sheep, cattle, and male and female servants. ³ 

Don’t listen to Hezekiah!’ For this is what the king of Assyria says, ‘Send me a token of your submission and surrender to me. ¹  Then each of you may eat from his own vine and fig tree and drink water from his own cistern,

They captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took possession of houses full of all sorts of good things – wells previously dug, vineyards, olive trees, and fruit trees in abundance. They ate until they were full ¹  and grew fat. They enjoyed to the full your great goodness.

Do not stare at me because ¹  I am dark, for ²  the sun has burned my skin. ³  My brothers ⁴  were angry ⁵  with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards. Alas, my own vineyard ⁶  I could not keep! ⁷
