“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers ¹  and engage in prostitution with detestable idols?

“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and becomes another man’s wife, he may not take her back again. ¹  Doing that would utterly defile the land. ²  But you, Israel, have given yourself as a prostitute to many gods. ³  So what makes you think you can return to me?” ⁴  says the Lord.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “You are about to die, ¹  and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they ²  are going. They ³  will reject ⁴  me and break my covenant that I have made with them. ⁵ 

David replied to Michal, “It was before the Lord! I was celebrating before the Lord, who chose me over your father and his entire family ¹  and appointed me as leader over the Lord’s people Israel.

and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of God’s covenant.

Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds!

and the priests – Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with their trumpets –

I will not show partiality to anyone, ¹  nor will I confer a title ²  on any man.

Can you lead out the constellations ¹  in their seasons, or guide the Bear with its cubs? ² 

Who can know all his errors? ¹  Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of. ² 

Give thanks to the Lord with the harp! Sing to him to the accompaniment of a ten-stringed instrument!

Then ¹  observers ²  will say, “Yes indeed, the godly are rewarded! ³  Yes indeed, there is a God who judges ⁴  in the earth!”

For you are my deliverer; ¹  under your wings ²  I rejoice.

I concluded, ¹  “Surely in vain I have kept my motives ²  pure and maintained a pure lifestyle. ³ 

As for the singers, as well as the pipers – all of them sing within your walls. ¹ 

People will curse ¹  the one who withholds grain, ²  but they will praise ³  the one who sells it. ⁴ 

Better is a person of humble standing ¹  who nevertheless has a servant, ²  than one who pretends to be somebody important ³  yet has no food.

A person who has friends ¹  may be harmed by them, ²  but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

To show partiality ¹  is terrible, ²  for a person will transgress over the smallest piece of bread. ³ 

You should have reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth who is pretending to be a prophet among you! ¹
