For ¹  a period of about forty years he put up with ²  them in the wilderness. ³ 

For some have already wandered away to follow Satan. ¹ 

The donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off, ¹  so Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go ²  look for the donkeys.” ³ 

Do not strike them dead suddenly, because then my people might forget the lesson. ¹  Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down, O Lord who shields us! ² 

Lest ¹  she should make level the path leading to life, ²  her paths are unstable ³  but she does not know it. ⁴ 

Like a frightened gazelle ¹  or a sheep with no shepherd, each will turn toward home, ²  each will run to his homeland.

Come back to me, you wayward people. I want to cure your waywardness. ¹  Say, ²  ‘Here we are. We come to you because you are the Lord our God.

But the time is coming when I will send men against Moab who will empty it out. They will empty the towns of their people, then will lay those towns in ruins. ¹  I, the Lord, affirm it! ² 

so that the house of Israel will no longer go astray from me, nor continue to defile themselves by all their sins. They will be my people and I will be their God, ¹  declares the sovereign Lord.’”

And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, ¹  he will rejoice more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.

And besides that, going around ¹  from house to house they learn to be lazy, ²  and they are not only lazy, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things they should not. ³ 

By professing it, some have strayed from the faith. ¹  Grace be with you all. ² 

The Beloved to Her Lover: Tell me, O you whom my heart ¹  loves, where do you pasture your sheep? Where do you rest your sheep during the midday heat? Tell me lest ²  I wander around ³  beside the flocks of your companions!

So Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and lived in the land of Nod, ¹  east of Eden.

When the people ¹  moved eastward, ²  they found a plain in Shinar ³  and settled there.

I also established my covenant with them ¹  to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as resident foreigners. ² 

No longer may the Israelites approach the tent of meeting, or else they will bear their sin ¹  and die.

“You have circled around this mountain long enough; now turn north.

“I said, ‘I want to cut them in pieces. ¹  I want to make people forget they ever existed.

O God, when you lead your people into battle, ¹  when you march through the desert, ²  (Selah)
