After he buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the tomb where the prophet ¹  is buried; put my bones right beside his bones,

But you have been thrown out of your grave like a shoot that is thrown away. ¹  You lie among ²  the slain, among those who have been slashed by the sword, among those headed for ³  the stones of the pit, ⁴  as if you were a mangled corpse. ⁵ 

or with princes who possessed gold, ¹  who filled their palaces ²  with silver.

This is what the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, says: “Go visit this administrator, Shebna, who supervises the palace, ¹  and tell him: ² 

They intended to bury him with criminals, ¹  but he ended up in a rich man’s tomb, ²  because ³  he had committed no violent deeds, nor had he spoken deceitfully.

The Lord says, “When that time comes, ¹  the bones of the kings of Judah and its leaders, the bones of the priests and prophets and of all the other people who lived in Jerusalem will be dug up from their graves.

I should have been as though I had never existed; ¹  I should have been carried right from the womb to the grave!

For no one remembers you in the realm of death, ¹  In Sheol who gives you thanks? ² 

Pilate said to them, “Take ¹  a guard of soldiers. Go and make it as secure as you can.”

The ¹  guards were shaken and became like dead men because they were so afraid of him.

I replied to the king, “O king, live forever! Why would I not appear dejected when the city with the graves of my ancestors ¹  lies desolate and its gates destroyed ²  by fire?”

and said to the king, “If the king is so inclined ¹  and if your servant has found favor in your sight, dispatch me to Judah, to the city with the graves of my ancestors, so that I can rebuild it.”

He ¹  buried him in the land of Moab near Beth Peor, but no one knows his exact burial place to this very day.

After Gideon died, the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They made Baal-Berith ¹  their god.

So they buried Abner in Hebron. The king cried loudly ¹  over Abner’s grave and all the people wept too.

For ¹  they do not speak the truth; ²  their stomachs are like the place of destruction, ³  their throats like an open grave, ⁴  their tongues like a steep slope leading into it. ⁵ 

Their grave becomes their permanent residence, their eternal dwelling place. ¹  They name their lands after themselves, ² 

For he did not kill me before I came from the womb, making my pregnant mother’s womb my grave forever. ¹ 

Suddenly there was a severe earthquake, for an angel of the Lord ¹  descending from heaven came and rolled away the stone and sat on it.

While ¹  they were going, some ²  of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened.
