I want you to know, brothers and sisters, ¹  that my situation has actually turned out to advance the gospel: ² 

But the widow who is truly in need, and completely on her own, ¹  has set her hope on God and continues in her pleas and prayers night and day.

the Ammonite officials said to Hanun, “Do you really think David is trying to honor your father by sending these messengers to express his sympathy? ¹  No, his servants have come to you so they can get information and spy out the land!” ² 

then I discerned all that God has done: ¹  No one really comprehends what happens ²  on earth. ³  Despite all human ⁴  efforts to discover it, no one can ever grasp ⁵  it. ⁶  Even if ⁷  a wise person claimed ⁸  that he understood, he would not really comprehend ⁹  it.

Is this really the kind of fasting I want? ¹  Do I want a day when people merely humble themselves, ²  bowing their heads like a reed and stretching out ³  on sackcloth and ashes? Is this really what you call a fast, a day that is pleasing to the Lord?

And so ¹  we too constantly thank God that when you received God’s message that you heard from us, ²  you accepted it not as a human message, ³  but as it truly is, God’s message, which is at work among you who believe.

His brothers were jealous ¹  of him, but his father kept in mind what Joseph said. ² 

Gideon said to God, “If you really intend to use me to deliver Israel, ¹  as you promised, then give me a sign as proof. ² 

Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, saying, “If you really do hand the Ammonites over to me,

Samson said to them, ¹  “This time I am justified in doing the Philistines harm!” ² 

What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition, ¹  O Lord God!

When Ahab saw Elijah, he ¹  said to him, “Is it really you, the one who brings disaster ²  on Israel?”

I was very upset, and I threw all of Tobiah’s household possessions out of the storeroom.

Why ¹  do I put myself in peril, ²  and take my life in my hands?

Do you really think ¹  that one who hates justice can govern? ²  And will you declare guilty the supremely righteous ³  One,

Would you indeed annul ¹  my justice? Would you declare me guilty so that you might be right?

or have wronged my ally, ¹  or helped his lawless enemy, ² 

Do you want to really live? ¹  Would you love to live a long, happy life? ² 

for he is too proud to recognize and give up his sin. ¹ 

Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother; ¹  he cannot pay God an adequate ransom price ²
