David sent some messengers to get her. ¹  She came to him and he had sexual relations with her. ²  (Now at that time she was in the process of purifying herself from her menstrual uncleanness.) ³  Then she returned to her home.

Then Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went on her way, wailing as she went.

He said, “Throw her down!” So they threw her down, and when she hit the ground, ¹  her blood splattered against the wall and the horses, and Jehu drove his chariot over her. ² 

Esther was still not divulging her lineage or her people, ¹  just as Mordecai had instructed her. ²  Esther continued to do whatever Mordecai said, just as she had done when he was raising her.

On the poplars in her midst we hang our harps,

A drought will come upon her land; her rivers and canals will be dried up. ¹  All of this will happen because her land is filled with idols. ²  Her people act like madmen because of ³  those idols they fear. ⁴ 

I will send people to winnow Babylonia like a wind blowing away chaff. ¹  They will winnow her and strip her land bare. ²  This will happen when ³  they come against her from every direction, when it is time to destroy her. ⁴ 

“Son of man, confront Jerusalem ¹  with her abominable practices

“‘Adulterous wife, who prefers strangers instead of her own husband!

In Tahpanhes the day will be dark ¹  when I break the yoke of Egypt there. Her confident pride will cease within her; a cloud will cover her, and her daughters will go into captivity.

Then the Lord’s angel said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit ¹  to her authority.

“Drink, my lord,” she replied, and quickly lowering ¹  her jug to her hands, she gave him a drink.

So Rachel ¹  gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob had marital relations with ²  her.

Then God took note of ¹  Rachel. He paid attention to her and enabled her to become pregnant. ² 

If he designated her for his son, then he will deal with her according to the customary rights ¹  of daughters.

If her father refuses to give her to him, he must pay money for the bride price of virgins.

“Any vow or sworn obligation that would bring affliction to her, ¹  her husband can confirm or nullify. ² 

Again they wept loudly. ¹  Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, ²  but Ruth ³  clung tightly to her. ⁴ 

When Naomi ¹  realized that Ruth ²  was determined to go with her, she stopped trying to dissuade her. ³ 

Indeed, ¹  your servants take delight in her stones, and feel compassion for ²  the dust of her ruins. ³
