When you ignore them, they panic. ¹  When you take away their life’s breath, they die and return to dust.

With all my heart I seek you. Do not allow me to stray from your commands!

You reprimand arrogant people. Those who stray from your commands are doomed. ¹ 

Rage takes hold of me because of the wicked, those who reject your law.

The arrogant dig pits to trap me, ¹  which violates your law. ² 

which cannot fill the reaper’s hand, or the lap of the one who gathers the grain!

My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord, ¹  and do not loathe ²  his rebuke.

Let your eyes look directly ¹  in front of you and let your gaze ²  look straight before you.

The one who despises instruction ¹  will pay the penalty, ²  but whoever esteems instruction ³  will ⁴  be rewarded. ⁵ 

The one who despises his neighbor sins, but whoever is kind to the needy is blessed.

It is dangerous ¹  to have zeal ²  without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily ³  makes poor choices. ⁴ 

If you stop listening to ¹  instruction, my child, you will stray ²  from the words of knowledge.

The one who shuts his ears ¹  to the cry ²  of the poor, he too will cry out and will not be answered. ³ 

The one who turns away his ear ¹  from hearing the law, even his prayer ²  is an abomination. ³ 

The toil of a stupid fool ¹  wears him out, ²  because he does not even know the way to the city. ³ 

Men bow down to them in homage, they lie flat on the ground in worship. ¹  Don’t spare them! ² 

He is the one who reduces rulers to nothing; he makes the earth’s leaders insignificant.

“Go immediately ¹  to Nineveh, that large city, ²  and proclaim to ³  it the message that I tell you.”

“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their ¹  hands when they eat.” ² 

Blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
