So, although I have quite a lot of confidence in Christ and could command you to do what is proper,

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see.

For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, ¹  whose architect and builder is God.

Offer the prescribed sacrifices ¹  and trust in the Lord! ² 

When ¹  I am afraid, I trust in you.

For this is what the master, the Lord, the Holy One of Israel says: “If you repented and patiently waited for me, you would be delivered; ¹  if you calmly trusted in me you would find strength, ²  but you are unwilling.

Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression! ¹  Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery! ²  If wealth increases, do not become attached to it! ³ 

You answer our prayers by performing awesome acts of deliverance, O God, our savior. ¹  All the ends of the earth trust in you, ²  as well as those living across the wide seas. ³ 

They will live securely in it; they will build houses and plant vineyards. They will live securely ¹  when I execute my judgments on all those who scorn them and surround them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.’”

However, through all this you did not have confidence in the Lord your God,

In you our ancestors ¹  trusted; they trusted in you ²  and you rescued them.

In my self-confidence I said, “I will never be upended.” ¹ 

I hate those who serve worthless idols, ¹  but I trust in the Lord.

But I trust in you, O Lord! I declare, “You are my God!”

O Lord who rules over all, ¹  how blessed are those who trust in you! ² 

In my time of trouble I cry out to you, for you will answer me.

O Israel, trust in the Lord! He is their deliverer ¹  and protector. ² 

Then you will walk on your way ¹  with security, and you ²  will not stumble. ³ 

The wise inherit honor, but he holds fools up ¹  to public contempt. ² 

The crown of the wise is their riches, ¹  but the folly ²  of fools is folly.
