I will bring the most wicked of the nations and they will take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the arrogance of the strong, and their sanctuaries ¹  will be desecrated.

“‘See here – this was the iniquity ¹  of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters had majesty, abundance of food, and enjoyed carefree ease, but they did not help ²  the poor and needy.

It also acted arrogantly against the Prince of the army, ¹  from whom ²  the daily sacrifice was removed and whose sanctuary ³  was thrown down.

“I have heard Moab’s taunts and the Ammonites’ insults. They ¹  taunted my people and verbally harassed those living in Judah. ² 

Her prophets are proud; ¹  they are deceitful men. Her priests defile what is holy; ²  they break God’s laws. ³ 

adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly.

Granted! ¹  They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear!

even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor, and an arrogant ¹  man. But I was treated with mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief,

especially those who indulge their fleshly desires ¹  and who despise authority. Brazen and insolent, ²  they are not afraid to insult ³  the glorious ones, ⁴ 

These people are grumblers and ¹  fault-finders who go ²  wherever their desires lead them, ³  and they give bombastic speeches, ⁴  enchanting folks ⁵  for their own gain. ⁶ 

And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances – those by which an individual, if he obeys them, ¹  will live. They boldly turned from you; ²  they rebelled ³  and did not obey.

God does not restrain his anger; ¹  under him the helpers of Rahab ²  lie crushed. ³ 

for he stretches out his hand against God, ¹  and vaunts himself ²  against the Almighty,

Scatter abroad ¹  the abundance ²  of your anger. Look at every proud man ³  and bring him low;

Look at every proud man and abase him; crush the wicked on the spot! ¹ 

For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile. ¹ 

You rule over the proud sea. ¹  When its waves surge, ²  you calm them.

O Lord, do I not hate those who hate you, and despise those who oppose you? ¹ 

Although ¹  he is scornful to arrogant scoffers, ²  yet ³  he shows favor to the humble. ⁴ 

Whoever corrects ¹  a mocker is asking for ²  insult; ³  whoever reproves a wicked person receives ⁴  abuse.
