Ephraim will be oppressed, ¹  crushed ²  under judgment, ³  because he was determined to pursue worthless idols. ⁴ 

But Peter said, “Certainly not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything defiled and ritually unclean!” ¹ 

But I said, ‘Certainly not, Lord, for nothing defiled or ritually unclean ¹  has ever entered my mouth!’

Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, ¹  sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. ² 

choosing rather to be ill-treated with the people of God than to enjoy sin’s fleeting pleasure.

So ¹  I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He ²  said to me, “Take the scroll ³  and eat it. It ⁴  will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

Then prepare for me some tasty food, the kind I love, and bring it to me. Then ¹  I will eat it so that I may bless you ²  before I die.”

Go to the flock and get me two of the best young goats. I’ll prepare ¹  them in a tasty way for your father, just the way he loves them.

So he went and got the goats ¹  and brought them to his mother. She ²  prepared some tasty food, just the way his father loved it.

They will eat the meat the same night; ¹  they will eat it roasted over the fire with bread made without yeast ²  and with bitter herbs.

They may observe it on the fourteenth day of the second month ¹  at twilight; they are to eat it with bread made without yeast and with bitter herbs.

We remember ¹  the fish we used to eat ²  freely ³  in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic.

But while the meat was still between their teeth, before they chewed it, ¹  the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague.

fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you ¹  and eventually bring good to you.

But the fig tree said to them, ‘I am not going to stop producing my sweet figs, my excellent fruit, just to sway above the other trees!’ ¹ 

“While he is ¹  filling his belly, God ²  sends his burning anger ³  against him, and rains down his blows upon him. ⁴ 

“As surely as God lives, ¹  who has denied me justice, ²  the Almighty, who has made my life bitter ³  –

Pay them back for their evil deeds! Pay them back for what they do! Punish them! ¹ 

I am surrounded by lions; I lie down ¹  among those who want to devour me; ²  men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are a sharp sword. ³ 

so that your feet may stomp ¹  in their blood, and your dogs may eat their portion of the enemies’ corpses.” ²
