But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among ¹  the men who went to investigate the land, lived.

When all the men ¹  had been circumcised, they stayed there in the camp until they had healed.

So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and remained there.

For six months Joab and the entire Israelite army ¹  stayed there until they had exterminated every male in Edom. ² 

He remained in hiding in God’s temple ¹  for six years, while Athaliah was ruling over the land.

The Lord said to me: “This gate will be shut; it will not be opened, and no one will enter by it. For the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it will remain shut.

Remain ¹  in me, and I will remain in you. ²  Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, ³  unless it remains ⁴  in ⁵  the vine, so neither can you unless you remain ⁶  in me.

“So now, please let your servant remain as my lord’s slave instead of the boy. As for the boy, let him go back with his brothers.

“You must not offer ¹  the blood of my sacrifice with bread containing yeast; the fat of my festal sacrifice must not remain until morning. ² 

If any of the meat from the consecration offerings ¹  or any of the bread is left over ²  until morning, then you are to burn up ³  what is left over. It must not be eaten, ⁴  because it is holy.

And when ¹  the cloud remained only ²  from evening until morning, when the cloud was taken up ³  the following morning, then they traveled on. Whether by day or by night, when the cloud was taken up they traveled.

When Joshua was very old, ¹  the Lord told him, “You are very old, and a great deal of land remains to be conquered.

Those remaining in Zion, ¹  those left in Jerusalem, ²  will be called “holy,” ³  all in Jerusalem who are destined to live. ⁴ 

I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. ²  But if it dies, it produces ³  much grain. ⁴ 

If you obey ¹  my commandments, you will remain ²  in my love, just as I have obeyed ³  my Father’s commandments and remain ⁴  in his love.

Therefore it remains for some to enter it, yet those to whom it was previously proclaimed did not enter because of disobedience.

Whether it was for two days, or a month, or a year, ¹  that the cloud prolonged its stay ²  over the tabernacle, the Israelites remained camped without traveling; ³  but when it was taken up, they traveled on.

But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, then those whom you allow to remain will be irritants in your eyes and thorns in your side, and will cause you trouble in the land where you will be living.

Before it was sold, ¹  did it not ²  belong to you? And when it was sold, was the money ³  not at your disposal? How have you thought up this deed in your heart? ⁴  You have not lied to people ⁵  but to God!”

The rest of the Kohathite clans received ten cities and their grazing areas.
