The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter ¹  and reached the tomb first. ² 

In those days ¹  Peter stood up among the believers ²  (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty people) and said,

When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple courts, ¹  he asked them for money. ² 

But Peter and John replied, ¹  “Whether it is right before God to obey ²  you rather than God, you decide,

Then Peter started speaking: ¹  “I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism in dealing with people, ² 

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on ¹  all those who heard the message. ² 

So Peter was kept in prison, but those in the church were earnestly ¹  praying to God for him. ² 

Now Peter continued knocking, and when they opened the door ¹  and saw him, they were greatly astonished. ² 

(for he who empowered ¹  Peter for his apostleship ²  to the circumcised ³  also empowered me for my apostleship to the Gentiles) ⁴ 

Now ¹  when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying down, ²  sick with a fever.

Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: ¹  first, Simon ²  (called Peter), and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee and John his brother;

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades ¹  will not overpower it.

Six days later ¹  Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, ²  and led them privately up a high mountain.

After ¹  they arrived in Capernaum, ²  the collectors of the temple tax ³  came to Peter and said, “Your teacher pays the double drachma tax, doesn’t he?”

Then Peter came to him and said, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother ¹  who sins against me? As many as seven times?”

Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all the disciples said the same thing.

Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He ¹  said to Peter, “So, couldn’t you stay awake with me for one hour?

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A ¹  slave girl ²  came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”

After ¹  a little while, those standing there came up to Peter and said, “You really are one of them too – even your accent ²  gives you away!”

Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. ¹
