Mourn over the field, ¹  over the delightful fields and the fruitful vine!

Those ¹  who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads

Samuel died, and all Israel assembled and mourned him. They buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David left and went down to the desert of Paran. ¹

Then you turned my lament into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and covered me with joy. ¹ 

I mourned for them as I would for a friend or my brother. ¹  I bowed down ²  in sorrow as if I were mourning for my mother. ³ 

The prayer of an oppressed man, as he grows faint and pours out his lament before the Lord. O Lord, hear my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! ² 

Nineveh ¹  is taken into exile ²  and is led away; ³  her slave girls moan ⁴  like doves ⁵  while they beat ⁶  their breasts. ⁷ 

“Speak to all the people and priests of the land as follows: ‘When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and seventh ¹  months through all these seventy years, did you truly fast for me – for me, indeed?

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ¹  we wailed in mourning, ²  yet you did not weep.’

Grieve, mourn, ¹  and weep. Turn your laughter ²  into mourning and your joy into despair.

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud ¹  over the miseries that are coming on you.

returned to his brothers, and said, “The boy isn’t there! And I, where can I go?”

There will be a great cry throughout the whole land of Egypt, such as there has never been, ¹  nor ever will be again. ²

My harp is used for ¹  mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.

During the evening, morning, and noontime I will lament and moan, ¹  and he will hear ²  me. ³ 

I pour out my lament before him; I tell him about ¹  my troubles.

“Futile! Futile!” laments ¹  the Teacher, ²  “Absolutely futile! ³  Everything ⁴  is futile!” ⁵
