Israel said, “Why did you bring this trouble ¹  on me by telling ²  the man you had one more brother?”

He asked them how they were doing. ¹  Then he said, “Is your aging father well, the one you spoke about? Is he still alive?”

So Judah and his brothers ¹  came back to Joseph’s house. He was still there, ²  and they threw themselves to the ground before him.

Then Israel said, “Enough! My son Joseph is still alive! I will go and see him before I die.”

Moses said, “As you wish! ¹  I will not see your face again.” ² 

Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What will I do with ¹  this people? – a little more ²  and they will stone me!” ³ 

If there are still many years, in keeping with them ¹  he must refund most of the cost of his purchase for his redemption,

and at the age of fifty years they must retire from performing the work and may no longer work.

No longer may the Israelites approach the tent of meeting, or else they will bear their sin ¹  and die.

For if you turn away from following him, he will once again abandon ¹  them in the wilderness, and you will be the reason for their destruction.” ² 

You have been taught that the Lord alone is God – there is no other besides him.

The rest of the people will hear and become afraid to keep doing such evil among you.

No prophet ever again arose in Israel like Moses, who knew the Lord face to face. ¹
