However, you may chop down any tree you know is not suitable for food, ¹  and you may use it to build siege works ²  against the city that is making war with you until that city falls.

If it does not accept terms of peace but makes war with you, then you are to lay siege to it.

Joshua and all Israel marched from Libnah to Lachish. He deployed his troops ¹  and fought against it.

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to the city while his generals were besieging it.

So as Joab kept watch on the city, he stationed Uriah at the place where he knew the best enemy soldiers ¹  were.

On my right the young rabble ¹  rise up; they drive me from place to place, ²  and build up siege ramps ³  against me. ⁴ 

Daughter Zion ¹  is left isolated, like a hut in a vineyard, or a shelter in a cucumber field; she is a besieged city. ²

They will besiege all of your villages ¹  until all of your high and fortified walls collapse – those in which you put your confidence throughout the land. They will besiege all your villages throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.

¹ So Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal city.

Omri and all Israel went up from Gibbethon and besieged Tirzah.

He has besieged ¹  and surrounded ²  me with bitter hardship. ³ 

Now at that time, ¹  the armies of the king of Babylon were besieging Jerusalem. ²  The prophet Jeremiah was confined in the courtyard of the guardhouse ³  attached to the royal palace of Judah.
