Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.

Saul replied, “May you be blessed by the Lord, for you have had compassion on me.

But a messenger came to Saul saying, “Come quickly, for the Philistines have raided the land!”

When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was absolutely terrified. ¹ 

So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men died together that day.

When the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

Then David chanted this lament over Saul and his son Jonathan.

Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no children to the day of her death.

When David was told what Rizpah daughter of Aiah, Saul’s concubine, had done,

The battle was thick ¹  around Saul; the archers spotted him and wounded him. ² 

So Saul and his three sons died; his whole household ¹  died together.

When all the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul,

The donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off, ¹  so Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go ²  look for the donkeys.” ³ 

They got up at dawn and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get up, so I can send you on your way.” So Saul got up and the two of them – he and Samuel – went outside.

When Saul and his servant ¹  arrived at Gibeah, a company of prophets was coming out to meet him. Then the spirit of God rushed upon Saul ²  and he prophesied among them.

Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where did you go?” Saul ¹  replied, “To look for the donkeys. But when we realized they were lost, ²  we went to Samuel.”

Saul said to his uncle, “He assured us that the donkeys had been found.” But Saul ¹  did not tell him what Samuel had said about the matter of kingship.

Now Saul was walking behind the ¹  oxen as he came from the field. Saul asked, “What has happened to the people? Why are they weeping?” So they told him about ²  the men of Jabesh.

So all the people went to Gilgal, where ¹  they established Saul as king in the Lord’s presence. They offered up peace offerings there in the Lord’s presence. Saul and all the Israelites were very happy.

All Israel heard this message, ¹  “Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel is repulsive ²  to the Philistines!” So the people were summoned to join ³  Saul at Gilgal.
