Now Joseph was 30 years old ¹  when he began serving ²  Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph was commissioned by ³  Pharaoh and was in charge of ⁴  all the land of Egypt.

When all the land of Egypt experienced the famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for food. Pharaoh said to all the people of Egypt, ¹  “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.”

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. Each ¹  of the Egyptians sold his field, for the famine was severe. ²  So the land became Pharaoh’s.

But he did not purchase the land of the priests because the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh and they ate from their allotment that Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

So Joseph made it a statute, ¹  which is in effect ²  to this day throughout the land of Egypt: One-fifth belongs to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not become Pharaoh’s.

When Pharaoh heard ¹  about this event, ²  he sought to kill Moses. So Moses fled ³  from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, ⁴  and he settled ⁵  by a certain well. ⁶ 

When ¹  Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, they did so, just as the Lord had commanded them – Aaron threw ²  down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants and it became a snake. ³ 

The magicians said ¹  to Pharaoh, “It is the finger ²  of God!” But Pharaoh’s heart remained hard, ³  and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had predicted.

Pharaoh sent representatives to investigate, ¹  and indeed, not even one of the livestock of Israel had died. But Pharaoh’s heart remained hard, ²  and he did not release the people.

The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; ¹  Pharaoh’s wise advisers give stupid advice. How dare you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the sages, one well-versed in the writings of the ancient kings?” ² 

But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases ¹  because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

Pharaoh gave his men orders about Abram, ¹  and so they expelled him, along with his wife and all his possessions.

Now ¹  in Egypt the Midianites ²  sold Joseph ³  to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard. ⁴ 

He restored the chief cupbearer to his former position ¹  so that he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand,

At the end of two full years ¹  Pharaoh had a dream. ²  As he was standing by the Nile,

The bad-looking, thin cows ate the seven fine-looking, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.

It happened just as he had said ¹  to us – Pharaoh ²  restored me to my office, but he impaled the baker.” ³ 

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream I was standing ¹  by the edge of the Nile.

“See here,” Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I place ¹  you in authority over all the land of Egypt.” ² 

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals and go ¹  to the land of Canaan!
