(41:1) ¹  See, his expectation is wrong, ²  he is laid low even at the sight of it. ³ 

for she has brought down ¹  many fatally wounded, and all those she has slain are many. ² 

And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

He has brought down the mighty ¹  from their thrones, and has lifted up those of lowly position; ² 

Now the believer ¹  of humble means ²  should take pride ³  in his high position. ⁴ 

Indeed, the Lord who commands armies has planned a day of judgment, ¹  for ²  all the high and mighty, for all who are proud – they will be humiliated;

Moab ¹  will spread out its hands in the middle of it, ²  just as a swimmer spreads his hands to swim; the Lord ³  will bring down Moab’s ⁴  pride as it spreads its hands. ⁵ 

so it would be a lowly kingdom which could not rise on its own but must keep its treaty with him in order to stand.

God chose ¹  what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something,

The evergreens also rejoice over your demise, ¹  as do the cedars of Lebanon, singing, ²  ‘Since you fell asleep, ³  no woodsman comes up to chop us down!’ ⁴ 

When he saw her, he ripped his clothes and said, “Oh no! My daughter! You have completely ruined me! ¹  You have brought me disaster! ²  I made an oath to the Lord, and I cannot break it.” ³ 

I said, ¹  “I will weep and mourn ²  for the grasslands on the mountains, ³  I will sing a mournful song for the pastures in the wilderness because they are so scorched no one travels through them. The sound of livestock is no longer heard there. Even the birds in the sky and the wild animals in the fields have fled and are gone.”

Israel was so severely weakened by Midian that the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help.

You deliver oppressed ¹  people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. ² 

he sets ¹  the lowly ²  on high, that those who mourn ³  are raised ⁴  to safety.

His victims are crushed and beaten down; they are trapped in his sturdy nets. ¹ 

For you deliver oppressed ¹  people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. ² 

I am dazed ¹  and completely humiliated; ²  all day long I walk around mourning.

So the Lord cut off Israel’s head and tail, both the shoots and stalk ¹  in one day.

“At that time ¹  Jacob’s splendor will be greatly diminished, ²  and he will become skin and bones. ³
