Like a coating of glaze ¹  over earthenware are fervent ²  lips with an evil heart. ³ 

Let another ¹  praise you, and not your own mouth; ²  someone else, ³  and not your own lips.

For with mocking lips and a foreign tongue he will speak to these people. ¹ 

I said, “Too bad for me! I am destroyed, ¹  for my lips are contaminated by sin, ²  and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. ³  My eyes have seen the king, the Lord who commands armies.” ⁴ 

for they aroused ¹  his temper, ²  and he spoke rashly. ³ 

I will speak, ¹  so that I may find relief; I will open my lips, so that I may answer.

As for the actions of people ¹  – just as you have commanded, I have not followed in the footsteps of violent men. ² 

As if with choice meat ¹  you satisfy my soul. ²  My mouth joyfully praises you, ³ 

I will not break ¹  my covenant or go back on what I promised. ² 

The one who conceals hatred utters lies, ¹  and the one who spreads ²  slander ³  is certainly ⁴  a fool.

The evil person is ensnared ¹  by the transgression of his speech, ²  but the righteous person escapes out of trouble. ³ 

The Lord ¹  abhors a person who lies, ²  but those who deal truthfully ³  are his delight. ⁴ 

The one who guards his words ¹  guards his life, but ²  whoever is talkative ³  will come to ruin. ⁴ 

In ¹  the speech ²  of a fool is a rod for his back, ³  but the words ⁴  of the wise protect them.

The divine verdict ¹  is in the words ²  of the king, his pronouncements ³  must not act treacherously ⁴  against justice.

A wise person’s heart ¹  makes his speech wise ²  and it adds persuasiveness ³  to his words. ⁴ 

One who acts wickedly ¹  pays attention to evil counsel; ²  a liar listens ³  to a malicious tongue. ⁴ 

Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, ¹  and do not deceive with your words. ² 

The one who hates others disguises ¹  it with his lips, but he stores up ²  deceit within him. ³ 

The words of a wise person ¹  win him ²  favor, ³  but the words ⁴  of a fool are self-destructive. ⁵
