For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song ²  by David. Listen, O God, to my prayer! Do not ignore ³  my appeal for mercy!

For I do not want you to be unaware, ¹  brothers and sisters, ²  that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,

Sober up as you should, and stop sinning! For some have no knowledge of God – I say this to your shame!

Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool. ¹  For a person ²  will reap what he sows,

he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in controversies and verbal disputes. This gives rise to envy, dissension, slanders, evil suspicions,

But ¹  these men, ²  like irrational animals – creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed ³  – do not understand whom ⁴  they are insulting, and consequently ⁵  in their destruction they will be destroyed, ⁶ 

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, ¹  regarding the affliction that happened to us in the province of Asia, ²  that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of living.

But if they refuse to listen, they pass over the river of death, ¹  and expire without knowledge.

“Who is this ¹  who darkens counsel ²  with words without knowledge?

for the needy are not permanently ignored, ¹  the hopes of the oppressed are not forever dashed. ² 

that does not respond to ¹  the magicians, or to a skilled snake-charmer.

For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me! ² 

They pronounce the guilty innocent for a payoff, they ignore the just cause of the innocent. ¹ 

Jesus ¹  said, “Even after all this, are you still so foolish?

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, ¹  so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel ²  until the full number ³  of the Gentiles has come in.

And the priest is to make atonement ¹  for the whole community of the Israelites, and they will be forgiven, ²  because it was unintentional and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire to the Lord, and their purification offering before the Lord, for their unintentional offense.

And the priest must make atonement for the person who sins unintentionally – when he sins unintentionally before the Lord – to make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.

you asked, ¹  ‘Who is this who darkens counsel without knowledge?’ But ²  I have declared without understanding ³  things too wonderful for me to know. ⁴
