During Jehoram’s ¹  reign Edom freed themselves from Judah’s control and set up their own king. ² 

Finally they brought the goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, and they placed their hands on them.

So we prayed to our God and stationed a guard to protect against them ¹  both day and night.

On the twenty-fourth day of this same month the Israelites assembled; they were fasting and wearing sackcloth, their heads covered with dust.

Joel son of Zicri was the officer in charge of them, and Judah son of Hassenuah was second-in-command over the city.

and his colleagues ¹  who were exceptional men – 128. The officer over them was Zabdiel the son of Haggedolim.

For they were under royal orders ¹  which determined their activity day by day. ² 

He will pay them back for their sin. ¹  He will destroy them because of ²  their evil; the Lord our God will destroy them.

May he rain down ¹  fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. ² 

O sovereign master, your decrees can give men life; may years of life be restored to me. ¹  Restore my health ²  and preserve my life.’

We existed from ancient times, ¹  but you did not rule over them, they were not your subjects. ² 

I will take delight in doing good to them. I will faithfully and wholeheartedly plant them ¹  firmly in the land.’

Kill all her soldiers! ¹  Let them be slaughtered! ²  They are doomed, ³  for their day of reckoning ⁴  has come, the time for them to be punished.”

Then the cherubim spread ¹  their wings with their wheels alongside them while the glory of the God of Israel hovered above them.

You took some of your clothing and made for yourself decorated high places; you engaged in prostitution on them. You went to him to become his. ¹ 

When a righteous person turns back from his righteousness and practices wrongdoing, he will die for it; ¹  because of the wrongdoing he has done, he will die.

Yet I had pity on ¹  them and did not destroy them, so I did not make an end of them in the wilderness.

So I have poured my anger on them, and destroyed them with the fire of my fury. I hereby repay them for what they have done, ¹  declares the sovereign Lord.”

Therefore I handed her over to her lovers, the Assyrians ¹  for whom she lusted.

“For this is what the sovereign Lord says: Bring up an army ¹  against them and subject them ²  to terror and plunder.
