The Lord both kills and gives life; he brings down to the grave ¹  and raises up.

If we go into the city, we’ll die of starvation, ¹  and if we stay here we’ll die! So come on, let’s defect ²  to the Syrian camp! If they spare us, ³  we’ll live; if they kill us – well, we were going to die anyway.” ⁴ 

But he did not execute the sons of the assassins. He obeyed the Lord’s commandment as recorded in the law scroll of Moses, ¹  “Fathers must not be put to death for what their sons do, ²  and sons must not be put to death for what their fathers do. ³  A man must be put to death only for his own sin.” ⁴ 

When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah succeeded him.

However, he did not execute their sons. He obeyed the Lord’s commandment as recorded in the law scroll of Moses, ¹  “Fathers must not be executed for what their sons do, ²  and sons must not be executed for what their fathers do. ³  A man must be executed only for his own sin.” ⁴ 

His servants conspired against him and killed him in his palace.

But man ¹  dies and is powerless; ²  he expires – and where is he? ³ 

He ¹  draws near to the place of corruption, and his life to the messengers of death. ² 

They die ¹  in their youth, and their life ends among the male cultic prostitutes. ² 

And so Job died, old and full of days.

Evil men set an ambush for the godly and try to kill them. ¹ 

Yet you will die like mortals; ¹  you will fall like all the other rulers.” ² 

They worshiped ¹  Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead. ² 

He has made me reside in deepest darkness ¹  like those who died long ago.

but ¹  you must not eat ²  from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when ³  you eat from it you will surely die.” ⁴ 

And the Lord did this ¹  on the next day; ²  all ³  the livestock of the Egyptians ⁴  died, but of the Israelites’ livestock not one died.

You must set boundaries ¹  for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed ²  to yourselves not to go up on the mountain nor touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death!

Six days ¹  work may be done, ²  but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, ³  holy to the Lord; anyone who does work on the Sabbath day must surely be put to death.

“‘If anyone ²  curses his father and mother ³  he must be put to death. He has cursed his father and mother; his blood guilt is on himself. ⁴ 

If a man ¹  commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, ²  both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.
