But whoever is among ¹  the living ²  has hope; a live dog is better than a dead lion.

In the middle ¹  of the living beings was something like ²  burning coals of fire ³  or like torches. It moved back and forth among the living beings. It was bright, and lightning was flashing out of the fire.

These are the ones who now take oaths ¹  in the name of the sinful idol goddess ²  of Samaria. They vow, ³  ‘As surely as your god ⁴  lives, O Dan,’ or ‘As surely as your beloved one ⁵  lives, O Beer Sheba!’ But they will fall down and not get up again.”

When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.

When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.

“Your servant our father is well,” they replied. “He is still alive.” They bowed down in humility. ¹ 

Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How long have you lived?” ¹ 

your cattle, and the wild animals that are in your land – all its produce will be for you ¹  to eat.

He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.

But you who remained faithful to the Lord your God are still alive to this very day, every one of you.

So Samuel led ¹  Israel all the days of his life.

The Lord is alive! ¹  My protector ²  is praiseworthy! ³  The God who delivers me ⁴  is exalted as king! ⁵ 

“Why does God ²  give ³  light to one who is in misery, ⁴  and life to those ⁵  whose soul is bitter,

You will laugh at destruction and famine ¹  and need not ²  be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

I am blameless. ¹  I do not know myself. ²  I despise my life.

You gave me ¹  life and favor, ²  and your intervention ³  watched over my spirit.

As for me, I know that my Redeemer ¹  lives, and that as the last ²  he will stand upon the earth. ³ 

But God ¹  drags off the mighty by his power; when God ²  rises up against him, he has no faith in his life. ³ 

“As surely as God lives, ¹  who has denied me justice, ²  the Almighty, who has made my life bitter ³  –

Mankind does not know its place; ¹  it cannot be found in the land of the living.
