When he entered he said to them, “Why are you distressed and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.”

and they said, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously ¹  as a beggar began saying, ²  “Is this not the man ³  who used to sit and beg?”

I say this to your shame! Is there no one among you wise enough to settle disputes between fellow Christians? ¹ 

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?

“This is the covenant that I will establish with them after those days, says the Lord. I will put ¹  my laws on their hearts and I will inscribe them on their minds,” ² 

But you have dishonored the poor! ¹  Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?

But his father and mother said to him, “Certainly you can find a wife among your relatives or among all our ¹  people! You should not have to go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines.” ²  But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, ³  because she is the right one for me.” ⁴ 

For when you offer blind animals as a sacrifice, is that not wrong? And when you offer the lame and sick, ¹  is that not wrong as well? Indeed, try offering them ²  to your governor! Will he be pleased with you ³  or show you favor?” asks the Lord who rules over all.

All ¹  who heard him were amazed and were saying, “Is this not ²  the man who in Jerusalem was ravaging ³  those who call on this name, and who had come here to bring them as prisoners ⁴  to the chief priests?”

But this knowledge is not shared by all. And some, by being accustomed to idols in former times, eat this food as an idol sacrifice, and their conscience, because it is weak, is defiled.

So Moses thought, ¹  “I will turn aside to see ²  this amazing ³  sight. Why does the bush not burn up?” ⁴ 

Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, and you will be ¹  defeated before your enemies.

“This commandment I am giving ¹  you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it too remote.

Then Jesse presented ¹  Shammah. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not a prophet of the Lord still here, that we may ask him?”

If he is uprooted ¹  from his place, then that place ²  will disown him, saying, ³  ‘I have never seen you!’

Which of all these ¹  does not know that the hand of the Lord ²  has done ³  this,

Does he argue ¹  with useless ²  talk, with words that have no value in them?
