So all of you approached me and said, “Let’s send some men ahead of us to scout out the land and bring us back word as to how we should attack it and what the cities are like there.”

When the Arameans realized that they had been defeated by Israel, they consolidated their forces. ¹ 

Who carves out a channel for the heavy rains, and a path for the rumble of thunder,

¹ Some traveled on ²  the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters. ³ 

“How long must I see the enemy’s battle flags and hear the military signals of their bugles?” ¹

Then we turned and set out toward the desert land on the way to the Red Sea ¹  just as the Lord told me to do, detouring around Mount Seir for a long time.

So the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom ¹  set out together. They wandered around on the road for seven days and finally ran out of water for the men and animals they had with them.

I gloat in triumph over those who tried to ambush me; ¹  I hear the defeated cries of the evil foes who attacked me. ² 

Now it is ordinarily an eleven-day journey ¹  from Horeb ²  to Kadesh Barnea ³  by way of Mount Seir. ⁴ 

So about three thousand men went up, but they fled from the men of Ai.

If only we had been satisfied to live on the other side of the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say now that Israel has retreated ¹  before its enemies?

They met ¹  Adoni-Bezek at Bezek and fought him. They defeated the Canaanites and Perizzites.

David did just as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines from Gibeon all the way to Gezer. ¹ 

The Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled,

So do not say, ¹  ‘We have found wisdom! God will refute ²  him, not man!’

I do not turn aside from your regulations, for you teach me.

They will report that the fords have been captured, the reed marshes have been burned, the soldiers are terrified. ¹ 

Mark out the routes for the sword to take: “Rabbah of the Ammonites” and “Judah with Jerusalem in it.” ¹ 

Then the Lord will make you return to Egypt by ship, over a route I said to you that you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”
