influenced by the hypocrisy of liars ¹  whose consciences are seared. ² 

But I say to you, do not take oaths at all – not by heaven, because it is the throne of God,

“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the experts in the law. ¹  They will condemn him to death,

But when the chief priests and the experts in the law ¹  saw the wonderful things he did and heard the children crying out in the temple courts, ²  “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant

saying, “The Son of Man must suffer ¹  many things and be rejected by the elders, ²  chief priests, and experts in the law, ³  and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” ⁴ 

Now ¹  an expert in religious law ²  stood up to test Jesus, ³  saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” ⁴ 

One of the experts in religious law ¹  answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult ²  us too.”

Woe to you experts in religious law! You have taken away ¹  the key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered ²  those who were going in.”

When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. ¹  Then ²  they led Jesus ³  away to their council ⁴ 

They incited the people, the ¹  elders, and the experts in the law; ²  then they approached Stephen, ³  seized him, and brought him before the council. ⁴ 

Even some of the provincial authorities ¹  who were his friends sent ²  a message ³  to him, urging him not to venture ⁴  into the theater.

Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience. ¹ 

The wicked person’s sacrifice ¹  is an abomination; how much more ²  when he brings it with evil intent! ³ 

I will give it to foreigners as loot, to the world’s wicked ones as plunder, and they will desecrate it.

“When they return to it, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations.

I have seen a disgusting thing in the temple of Israel: there Ephraim practices temple prostitution and Judah defiles itself.

Therefore they will now be the first to go into exile, ¹  and the religious banquets ²  where they sprawl on couches ³  will end.

I will remove the sorcery ¹  that you practice, ²  and you will no longer have omen readers living among you. ³ 

because he taught them like one who had authority, ¹  not like their experts in the law. ² 

Then ¹  an expert in the law ²  came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” ³
