“Son of man, turn toward ¹  the Ammonites ²  and prophesy against them.

“Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: “‘Wail, “Alas, the day is here!” ¹ 

“But you made the Nazirites drink wine; ¹  you commanded the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy!’

Then the Lord took me from tending ¹  flocks and gave me this commission, ²  ‘Go! Prophesy to my people Israel!’

Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered disgraces his head.

For you can all prophesy one after another, so all can learn and be encouraged.

Then ¹  they ²  told me: “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, ³  languages, and kings.”

(He had four unmarried ¹  daughters who prophesied.) ² 

So Saul sent messengers to capture David. When they saw a company of prophets prophesying with Samuel standing there as their leader, the spirit of God came upon Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied.

He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, ¹  – prophesy, son of man – and say to the breath: ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these corpses so that they may live.’”

They ¹  say to the visionaries, “See no more visions!” and to the seers, “Don’t relate messages to us about what is right! ²  Tell us nice things, relate deceptive messages. ³ 

Then the spirit of the Lord will rush upon you and you will prophesy with them. You will be changed into a different person.

A lion has roared! ¹  Who is not afraid? The sovereign Lord has spoken! Who can refuse to prophesy? ² 

Don’t prophesy at Bethel ¹  any longer, for a royal temple and palace are here!” ² 

They ¹  blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, ²  “Prophesy! Who hit you?” ³ 

But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, ¹  encouragement, and consolation.

For I, the Lord, affirm ¹  that I did not send them. They are prophesying lies to you. If you ²  listen to them, I will drive you and the prophets who are prophesying lies out of the land and you will all die in exile.” ³ 

‘Don’t preach with such impassioned rhetoric,’ they say excitedly. ¹  ‘These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.’ ² 

Those prophets are just prophesying lies. They are prophesying the delusions of their own minds. ¹ 

The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, ¹  but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
