The Beloved to Her Lover: Awake, O north wind; come, O south wind! Blow on my garden so that its fragrant spices may send out their sweet smell. ¹  May my beloved come into his garden and eat its delightful fruit!

You will winnow them and the wind will blow them away; the wind will scatter them. You will rejoice in the Lord; you will boast in the Holy One of Israel.

Ephraim continually feeds on the wind; he chases the east wind all day; he multiplies lies and violence. They make treaties ¹  with Assyria, and send olive oil as tribute ²  to Egypt.

Then ¹  seven heads of grain, thin and burned by the east wind, were sprouting up after them.

Do you intend to criticize mere words, and treat ¹  the words of a despairing man as wind?

“How long will you speak these things, ¹  seeing ²  that the words of your mouth are like a great ³  wind? ⁴ 

How often ¹  are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff swept away ²  by a whirlwind?

The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.

You pick me up on the wind and make me ride on it; ¹  you toss me about ²  in the storm. ³ 

I will hurry off to a place that is safe from the strong wind ¹  and the gale.”

Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. ¹ 

He remembered ¹  that they were made of flesh, and were like a wind that blows past and does not return. ² 

Like cloudy skies and wind that produce no rain, ¹  so is the one who boasts ²  of a gift not given. ³ 

Better is one handful with some rest than two hands full of toil ¹  and chasing the wind.

He who watches the wind will not sow, and he who observes the clouds will not reap. ¹ 

The Lord says, “I will cause a destructive wind ¹  to blow against ²  Babylon and the people who inhabit Babylonia. ³ 

Your rowers have brought you into surging waters. The east wind has wrecked you in the heart of the seas.

Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, ¹  was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.

But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, ¹  “Lord, save me!”
