As for their enemies, ¹  they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress ²  and suffering.

“But in those days, after that suffering, ¹  the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light;

Then a famine occurred throughout ¹  Egypt and Canaan, causing ²  great suffering, and our ³  ancestors ⁴  could not find food.

For our momentary, light suffering ¹  is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison

But remember the former days when you endured a harsh conflict of suffering after you were enlightened.

Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praises.

For this finds God’s favor, ¹  if because of conscience toward God ²  someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.

You have taken notice, ¹  for ²  you always see ³  one who inflicts pain and suffering. ⁴  The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; ⁵  you deliver ⁶  the fatherless. ⁷

When the Lord gives you relief from your suffering and anxiety, ¹  and from the hard labor which you were made to perform,

that during a severe ordeal of suffering, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in the wealth ¹  of their generosity.

For I do not say this so there would be relief for others and suffering for you, but as a matter of equality.

For this reason I ask you ¹  not to lose heart because of what I am suffering for you, ²  which ³  is your glory. ⁴
