Ner was the father of Kish, and Kish was the father of Saul. Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal. ¹

The Philistines stayed right on the heels of ¹  Saul and his sons. They ²  struck down Saul’s ³  sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua.

From Benjamin, Saul’s tribe, ¹  there were 3,000, most of whom, up to that time, had been loyal to Saul. ² 

Now the day before Saul arrived, the Lord had told ¹  Samuel:

When Saul ¹  had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.

Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.” ¹ 

Saul said, “God will punish me severely if Jonathan doesn’t die!” ¹ 

Then Saul stopped chasing the Philistines, and the Philistines went back home. ¹ 

Saul proceeded to the city ¹  of Amalek, where he set an ambush ²  in the wadi. ³ 

When Samuel turned to leave, Saul ¹  grabbed the edge of his robe and it tore.

Now David was the youngest. While the three oldest sons followed Saul,

When David’s words were overheard and reported to Saul, he called for him. ¹ 

So Saul was keeping an eye on David from that day onward.

When Saul saw how very successful he was, he was afraid of him.

When Saul realized ¹  that the Lord was with David and that his ²  daughter Michal loved David, ³ 

When Saul sent messengers to arrest David, she said, “He’s sick.”

It was reported to Saul saying, “David is at Naioth in Ramah.”

Jonathan replied to Saul, “David urgently requested that he be allowed to go to Bethlehem.

Then Saul said, “Listen, son of Ahitub.” He replied, “Here I am, my lord.”
