The Lord responded ¹  to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying there face down? ² 

Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without seeing the king’s face.

He turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,

Why do you hide your face ¹  and regard me as your enemy?

Because he covered his face with fat, ¹  and made ²  his hips bulge with fat, ³ 

my face is reddened ¹  because of weeping, ²  and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness, ³ 

He conceals ¹  the face of the full moon, ²  shrouding it with his clouds.

They detest me and maintain their distance; ¹  they do not hesitate to spit in my face.

The godly ¹  face many dangers, ²  but the Lord saves ³  them ⁴  from each one of them.

Hide your face ¹  from my sins! Wipe away ²  all my guilt!

A joyful heart ¹  makes the face cheerful, ²  but by a painful heart the spirit is broken.

Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,

Let him bury his face in the dust; ¹  perhaps there is hope.

“I will destroy ¹  everything from the face of the earth,” says the Lord.

When ¹  you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,

For ¹  it will overtake ²  all who live on the face of the whole earth. ³ 

And just as people ¹  are appointed to die once, and then to face judgment, ² 

and they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, ¹  the way a person speaks ²  to a friend. Then Moses ³  would return to the camp, but his servant, Joshua son of Nun, a young man, did not leave the tent. ⁴
