Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  before Abraham came into existence, ²  I am!” ³ 

What then shall we say that Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh, ¹  has discovered regarding this matter? ² 

For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited ¹  to him as righteousness.” ² 

But the statement it was credited to him ¹  was not written only for Abraham’s ²  sake,

nor are all the children Abraham’s true descendants; rather “through Isaac will your descendants be counted.” ¹ 

Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I.

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, ¹  heirs according to the promise.

For surely his concern is not for angels, but he is concerned for Abraham’s descendants.

Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,

But see how great he must be, if ¹  Abraham the patriarch gave him a tithe ²  of his plunder.

Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

I tell you, many will come from the east and west to share the banquet ¹  with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob ²  in the kingdom of heaven,

‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? ¹  He is not the God of the dead but of the living!” ² 

Then ¹  shouldn’t ²  this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan ³  bound for eighteen long ⁴  years, be released from this imprisonment ⁵  on the Sabbath day?”

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth ¹  when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, ²  and all the prophets in the kingdom of God ³  but you yourselves thrown out. ⁴ 

“Now ¹  the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. ²  The ³  rich man also died and was buried. ⁴ 

And in hell, ¹  as he was in torment, ²  he looked up ³  and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side. ⁴ 

“We are descendants ¹  of Abraham,” they replied, ²  “and have never been anyone’s slaves! How can you say, ³  ‘You will become free’?”

I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. ¹  But you want ²  to kill me, because my teaching ³  makes no progress among you. ⁴ 

But now you are trying ¹  to kill me, a man who has told you ²  the truth I heard from God. Abraham did not do this! ³
