He captured the fortified cities of Judah and marched against Jerusalem.

He removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah. The kingdom had rest under his rule. ¹ 

They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the scroll of the law of the Lord. They traveled to all the cities of Judah and taught the people.

He appointed judges throughout the land and in each of the fortified cities of Judah. ¹ 

The people of Judah ¹  assembled to ask for the Lord’s help; ²  they came from all the cities of Judah to ask for the Lord’s help. ³ 

And the rest of the Israelites, with the priests and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, each on his own property.

For God will deliver Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, and his people ¹  will again live in them and possess Zion. ² 

They will rebuild the perpetual ruins and restore the places that were desolate; ¹  they will reestablish the ruined cities, the places that have been desolate since ancient times.

Your chosen ¹  cities have become a desert; Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem ²  is a desolate ruin.

The gates of the towns in southern Judah will be shut tight. ¹  No one will be able to go in or out of them. ²  All Judah will be carried off into exile. They will be completely carried off into exile.’” ³ 

on Kerioth and Bozrah. It will come on all the towns of Moab, both far and near.

Ben Hadad accepted King Asa’s offer and ordered his army commanders to attack the cities of Israel. ¹  They conquered ²  Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim, ³  and all the storage cities of Naphtali.

He did this while the army of the king of Babylon was attacking Jerusalem and the cities of Lachish and Azekah. He was attacking these cities because they were the only fortified cities of Judah which were still holding out. ¹ 

So they put foremen ¹  over the Israelites ²  to oppress ³  them with hard labor. As a result ⁴  they built Pithom and Rameses ⁵  as store cities for Pharaoh.

So Israel took all these cities; and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. ¹ 

you must then designate some towns as towns of refuge for you, to which a person who has killed someone unintentionally may flee.

“You must give three towns on this side of the Jordan, and you must give three towns in the land of Canaan; they must be towns of refuge.

All Jerusalem was terrified ¹  because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal cities. It was larger than Ai and all its men were warriors.

Joshua and the Israelites almost totally wiped them out, but some survivors did escape to the fortified cities. ¹ 

Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half of Ammonite territory ¹  as far as Aroer near ²  Rabbah.
