But no one says, ‘Where is God, my Creator, who gives songs in the night, ¹ 

Do you know how God commands them, ¹  how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? ² 

From the north he comes in golden splendor; ¹  around God is awesome majesty.

For God deprived her of wisdom, and did not impart understanding to her.

“Will the one who contends ¹  with the Almighty correct him? ²  Let the person who accuses God give him an answer!”

Tremble, O earth, before the Lord – before the God of Jacob,

If only ¹  you would kill the wicked, O God! Get away from me, you violent men! ² 

Every word of God is purified; ¹  he is like ²  a shield for those who take refuge in him. ³ 

But Jeshurun ¹  became fat and kicked, you ²  got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.

That day ¹  – let it be darkness; ²  let not God on high regard ³  it, nor let light shine ⁴  on it!

“Therefore, ¹  blessed ²  is the man whom God corrects, ³  so do not despise the discipline ⁴  of the Almighty. ⁵ 

For the arrows ¹  of the Almighty ²  are within me; my spirit ³  drinks their poison; ⁴  God’s sudden terrors ⁵  are arrayed ⁶  against me.

I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn ¹  me; tell me ²  why you are contending ³  with me.’

But ¹  the tents of robbers are peaceful, and those who provoke God are confident ²  – who carry their god in their hands. ³ 

Have pity on me, my friends, have pity on me, for the hand of God has struck me.

“Is not God on high in heaven? ¹  And see ²  the lofty stars, ³  how high they are!

Surely then you will delight yourself ¹  in the Almighty, and will lift up your face toward God.

For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, ¹  when God takes away his life? ² 

Now in this, you are not right – I answer you, ¹  for God is greater than a human being. ² 

He entreats God, and God ¹  delights in him, he sees God’s face ²  with rejoicing, and God ³  restores to him his righteousness. ⁴
